Who was Luis Huesca? – Chicago Police Officer Killed

A member of the Chicago Police Department, Luis Huesca, was shot and killed early Sunday in the neighborhood of Gage Park.

Huesca, 30 years old, was shot and killed in an apparent carjacking while he was returning home from his shift.

He was found with gunshot wounds and his car stolen.

“We can’t confirm that right now, but detectives are working through it. What we do know is that the officer’s vehicle was taken,” Snelling said Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling said during a news conference Sunday morning.

“But to get to the total motive of what happened, we need more information and the detective division is working on that.”

Officers responded to a gunshot detection alert at 2:53 a.m. in the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue.

Once there, they scoured the area and found an officer, Huesca, suffering from gunshot wounds in the area of the 3100 block of West 56th Street.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“Our officer was headed home after his tour of duty,” Snelling said. “While returning home, the officer was shot multiple times.”

Huesca was just two days shy of his 31st birthday when he was killed, CPD revealed. He was in his uniform, but with a jacket over it at the time he was shot.

He was a six-year member of the Department.

“We are deeply mourning the death of Officer Luis M. Huesca of the 5th District/Priority Response Team following an act of unconscionable gun violence in our city. No family or community should ever have to suffer such pain,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement.

“I met with Officer Huesca’s mother and uncle this morning and assured them that they have the full support of my administration as they deal with this unspeakable loss. Our city is grieving, and our condolences go out to their entire family as well as Luis’ fellow officers and community,”

A procession for Huesca was held Sunday morning from the University of Chicago Hospital to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

CPD officer, Pete Kalenik, paid tribute to Huesca in a post on Facebook.

“After completing his tour of duty, Police Officer Luis M. Huesca was murdered early this morning,” he wrote.

“May his family, friends, and the city that he served remember the words of Aeschylus, as we grieve his loss: “Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart, until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom, through the awful grace of God,” Kalenik added.
