A Smyth County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was killed during a traffic stop on Friday, August 9th has been identified as Hunter Reedy.
Reedy, 27, was assisting Marion Police Officers during an attempted traffic stop on Rt. 16 around 5 p.m. Friday when the suspect opened fire.
Both Hunter Reedy and another Deputy were hit, leading to Reed’s death.
The other deputy and the suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were flown to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to the Virginia State Police, the incident happened around 5 p.m. when a Marion Police Officer initiated a traffic stop on Rt. 16.
The vehicle refused to stop but later stopped around the intersection of Rt. 16 and Hatchery Dr. in the county.
Smyth County Sheriff’s Deputies therefore reported to the scene to assist Marion PD and that’s when the suspect opened fire on the law enforcement officers.
Reedy and his colleague from the Sheriff’s office were both struck while police returned fire and struck the suspect.
The Virginia State Police is investigating the incident and charges would be announced in due time.
