A Hillsdalle man identified as James A. Dellea is dead following an officer-involved shooting that has triggered a New York State police investigation.
James Dellea, 48, of Hillsdale, NY, was shot after police were called at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday in regards to a man threatening self-harm.
According to a statement from police, Dellea refused to comply with orders, led officers on a chase, and then brandished a firearm at which point he was shot.
The New York State Police released a statement on the incident.
It read; “On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Trooper were attempting to locate James A. Dellea, age 48, of Hillsdale, NY who had threatened self-harm. Troopers located Dellea in the parking lot of the Albany-Saratoga Speedway on State Route 9 in the Town of Malta, New York.
“When Troopers attempted to interview Dellea, he failed to follow lawful commands to exit his vehicle and fled the scene. A low-speed vehicle pursuit was initiated. Dellea subsequently stopped his vehicle in the parking lot of Bethel Saratoga, 3246 State Route 9, in the City of Saratoga Springs, New York. He again, refused to exit his vehicle despite numerous commands to do so. Dellea brandished a firearm, at which time one of the Troopers fired his weapon, fatally striking him.“
Dellea was mourned following his passing by many friends and family on social media.
“I am still in shock, when the news broke last night I couldn’t believe it, we always had good times together, even my kids were in shock when they seen the news as they always loved talking and enjoying your company when they seen you. You will be missed jimbo by many RIP my friend,” read one post.
His son, also James Dellea, wrote on Facebook: “I can’t do this,”
