One person died and four others were injured following an accident involving students from the Union Community School District in La Porte City, Iowa on Tuesday.
Union High School senior Gavin Rohrbach died in the crash which occurred at the intersection of Dubuque Road and South Canfield Road near 9:45 p.m.
The students were returning from the volleyball game between Oelwein and Union in Jesup.
According to the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, a Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle was traveling south on South Canfield Road around 9:45 p.m. when it ran the stop sign at Dubuque Road, colliding with a Buick Rendezvous in the intersection.
Rohrbach was pronounced dead on the scene and the four other students sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
One woman from the other car was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for possible serious injury.
Crews from Jesup Fire and Ambulance, Dunkerton Ambulance, and Waterloo Fire Ambulance also responded to the scene.
On Wednesday, Union Community School District announced the cancellation of all extra-curricular and co-curricular activities for grades 7 – 12 through Sunday, September 15.
The school district also released the following statement: “It is with tremendous sadness that I share this update with you. Last night, multiple Union students were involved in an auto accident returning from the volleyball game at Oelwein. One of the individuals, Gavin Rohrbach, Class of 2025, died at the scene of the accident. The other students have varying injuries,”
A meal train has been started for the Rohrbach family following the tragedy. It has already raised close to $15,000.
