A man who shot and killed a Russell County Sheriff’s Deputy during a shootout in Kentucky on Monday has been identified.
41-year-old Joshua Arnold, of Russell Springs KY, exchanged gunfire with Russell County Sheriff’s Deputies on Bluebird Drive in Russell Springs.
The shooting led to the death of Deputy Josh Phipps as well as the suspect, Josh Arnold.
The Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police and other agencies were on a search for a suspect who ran away on Bluebird Drive in Russell Springs.
Phipps and other officers chased the suspect to a mobile home where an exchange of gunfire commenced.
Phipps was shot and transported to a local hospital where he died. The suspect, later identified as Joshua Arnold, was also shot.
He was also transported to a hospital where he passed away.
A memorial was held for Phipps Tuesday at which friends, family members and neighbors turned up to pay their respects outside the county courthouse.
Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston said, “He died a hero and I just want everybody to remember the family in prayers.”
Retired officer Tracey Vantassell added, “It’s like losing a member of your family because are all one big family.”
